My Journey and Passion for Public Health

Welcome to Tanya Honderick Consulting, LLC! My unique background combines 25 years of public health nursing and academic program leadership experience. Some might call me a “pracademic.” This dual expertise enables me to offer comprehensive insights and solutions that  lead to evidence-based practice in public health.

My career began with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Kansas in 1996, followed by a joint Master of Science in Nursing (MS) and Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2003. During my community health rotation at the Wyandotte County Health Department, I discovered my passion for public health. The experience of making home visits to new mothers and babies and working in WIC and immunization clinics illuminated the critical role of early health interventions in shaping stronger, more resilient communities.

Starting in medical/surgical nursing at Hutchinson Hospital, I quickly transitioned to public health nursing. My clinical experience spans a decade in well-child clinics, WIC, family planning, and prenatal clinics across Reno County and Johnson County in Kansas. These roles solidified my commitment to public health and laid the foundation for my future endeavors.

Academic and Professional Leadership

In 2009, I returned to my alma mater, the University of Kansas Master of Public Health program, where I played a pivotal role in daily operations, student recruitment and advising, curriculum development, program planning and evaluation, and CEPH accreditation activities. My effort extended beyond the university, working closely with regional and state public health leaders on workforce development, education, and research initiatives.

For over 10 years, I served on the executive board of the Kansas Public Health Association (KPHA), including a term as president in 2014. I was a site visitor for the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) from 2014 to 2021. I have used that experience to support the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Shawnee County Health Department’s accreditation activities. I currently serve on the Kansas Workforce Development Coordinating Council and the Midwestern Public Health Training Center Regional Steering Committee.

Recognitions and Credentials

Throughout my career, I have received numerous honors, including traveling to China in 2006 as a Community Health Nurse Delegate with People to People International, completing the Kansas Public Health Leadership Institute in 2008, and being a 2014 fellow of the National Leadership Academy for the Public’s Health. In 2019, I was selected for the inaugural class of the Kansas City Women’s Leadership program by the Kansas City Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Most recently, I earned the Certified in Public Health (CPH) credential in 2023.
